What’s special about Ethiopia and coffee?

You may know that I love to travel even more than I love coffee - and that’s a lot! And I’ve been very fortunate to have travelled, worked and lived all around the world. In all my travels, one of the most special places I visited - and the place with the best coffee by far! - was Ethiopia.

Did You KNow…

  • Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee and it has been a popular beverage here for centuries.

  • Some countries grow coffee mostly for export but Ethiopians LOVE coffee and drink about half of the coffee they grow making them the top coffee consumers in Africa.

  • We LOVE Ethiopian coffee and put it in almost all our blends. Our Road Trip blend is a sweet and chocolatey mix of Ethiopian and South American coffees - yum!

  • The Ethiopian coffee ceremony is performed daily in many Ethiopian households. It involves roasting green coffee, grinding it, brewing in a special coffee pot, then drinking 3 rounds of coffee. This ceremony can take 2 hours - pretty different from the grab & go coffee culture of Canada!

  • Ethiopia and Liberia are the only African countries that were not colonized in the 1800s and 1900s. However, Ethiopia was occupied by the Italians from 1936-1941 which is why you find Italian-style espresso bars and cafes in Addis Ababa.

  • Contrary to what you saw in Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, many people believe that the Ark of the Covenant is in a church in Ethiopia and has been there for about 3,000 years. It was brought to Ethiopia from Jerusalem by the Queen of Sheba.
