Goldilocks & the 3 water temperatures

Goldilocks & the 3 water temperatures

Too hot, too cold, just right….

After Goldilocks had eaten the bears’ porridge, she decided to make coffee.

The first time she boiled the kettle and poured it right away, using water that was too hot.  “Oh!” she cringed, “this coffee is bitter.”

So she  made more coffee, without heating the water again. This time it was too cold.  “Oh!” she said, making a disappointed face, “this coffee is sour and weak.”

The third time she heated the kettle to a boil then let it cool for just under a minute before she poured it. “Ah!” she sighed, sipping her java contentedly, “this coffee is just right.”

And that’s all you need to know.

You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on an expensive kettle.  But you can if you want to!

Keep it clean (talking about your coffee machine)

Keep it clean (talking about your coffee machine)

Keep your coffee tasting great!

  • Use good quality, fresh roasted beans (check out our selection here - we'll mail them to you whenever you need)
  • clean your coffee maker after every use - just wash out the coffee pot and brew basket with soap and water
  • do a deep clean by running vinegar and water through once in a while. How often should you do a deep clean? At least once a year. Every couple months if you're using it daily. Monthly if you're using it for several pots a day.

Read on for a little more detail on how to deep clean your coffee machine...

Darryl's coffee secret? "Just off the boil" is a term used in beer brewing but it also applies here. When you hear that ding or click, don't reach. Pause for a moment...

Sparkplug Coffee Lover

Hari Balaraman is one of Sparkplug Coffee's first customers and he lives close to Sparkplug coffee HQ in Toronto so his coffee is delivered on foot instead of via Canada Post. He invited me to stop in to sample a cup of kopi luwak (aka civet coffee or cat poop coffee) that he'd purchased in his travels. I took the opportunity to quiz him about his coffee habits and other passions.

The new Standard for coffee

The new Standard for coffee

The winning SIZE names for Sparkplug Coffees are...

Standard 300g

Formerly known as 750cc, the Standard holds at least 300 grams and makes about 30 to 35 cups of delicious coffee, depending on how you brew.

Large 900g

The Two Pounder is now Large and is still 900 grams of coffee. You should get 100 or more cups of coffee out of it, depending how you brew. What more can we say? A super option if you drink a couple cups a day.
